Overview

With over 9 million people in Britain over the age of 65 (approx. 17% of the population and rising), this age band accounts for around 60,000 hospital admissions a year, a further 20,000 A&E attendances and over 120,000 GP visits.

As such, high-quality, compassionate and effective care for frail older people has been recognised as a key priority and is more in demand than ever.

This credit-bearing course is offered at both our Reading and West London campuses and can be taken as a standalone module or used towards further studies.

Course requirements: Evidence of study at Level 5 (Diploma Level).

  • Sept 24 - Aug 25 fees: £900
  • Sept 25 - Aug 26 fees: TBC

This course is taught on day release, select a start date to see the study days:

Study days are from 9.30am to 4pm.

This course will enable you to enhance your knowledge and skills in the following areas by adopting a person-centred approach:

  • Ageing process - theories of ageing
  • Recognition and Management of frailty
  • Holistic health and social care assessment of complex needs
  • Effective assessment and management of chronic disease co-morbidities
  • Pharmacy issues - polypharmacy and compliance
  • Strategies to promote well-being
  • Ageing and mental health (depression, dementia, confusion, delirium)
  • Identification of risk and risk management– to include falls, nutrition, hydration, sensory impairment, continence
  • Understanding of societies perception of aging and older people and potential impact on care
  • Skills to engage and assess frail and older people, family/carers
  • Strategies to support families and carers of older and frail people
  • Promoting the voice of older and frail people and championing service improvements leading to enhanced care delivery
  • Effective interagency and cross boundary working
  • Ethical Issues; adults with incapacity, competency, consent, acting as a patient advocate
  • Relevant policy and quality benchmarks.

  • BSc (Hons) Clinical Practice (badged awards available e.g. Older People)
  • PgCert/PgDip/MSc Clinical Practice, first module in pathway can be studied at L6 - maximum of 20 credits.
