Overview

This clinically focused course enables healthcare practitioners to develop their knowledge and clinical skills, in order to deliver clinically effective, safe and compassionate care for patients undergoing surgery in the perioperative environment.

To gain the knowledge and skills required for the completion of the written assignment and clinical competency element for the module, it is expected that you will be placed in a surgical role, for a minimum of 300 hours, with an opportunity to rotate to a minimum of 3 surgical specialities.

Delivered at our West London campus, this credit-bearing course is best suited for those working in an operating theatre environment.

Course requirements: Evidence of study at Level 5 (Diploma Level).

Cost and funding: This fee covers the full course cost.

  • Sept 23 - Aug 24 fees: £900
  • Sept 24 - Aug 25 fees: TBC

Assessment method: Written reflective assignment 100% with the submission of a competency-based practice assessment document

  • general and specialist surgical instrumentation

  • information technology and advances in applications

  • prostheses and implants
  • surgical specialities
  • surgical anatomy and pathology
  • surgical procedures

  • legal and professional issues.

Study days are from 9am to 5pm.

I have over three decades experience of working in the perioperative environment, twelve of which were spent as a clinical practice educator, encompassing anaesthetics, surgery and post-anaesthetic care. At the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare, I teach pre and post registration students, enabling them to provide a high standard of evidence-based care in the three areas of perioperative practice.

This can be taken as a standalone module or the credits can be used towards one of our new and exciting courses:

  • BSc (Hons) Clinical Practice  
  • PgCert/PgDip/MSc Clinical Practice (first module in pathway can be studied at L6  or L7- maximum of 20 credits) - badged awards available.
