Official opening of Paragon Campus by Her Majesty the Queen

University of West London was honoured to welcome Her Majesty The Queen to its Brentford site, West London campus for the official opening of its award-winning building, Paragon House on Friday 20 February 2009.

A number of special guests were on hand to greet the Royal party during the visit including several alumni such as William Brake ('48), Ian Carter ('83) and Tim Ingram Hill ('70). They were also accompanied on their visit by the Deputy Master of the Household, Edward Griffiths who is also a University of West London alumnus. A special reception was also held on the top floor of the building where alumni, staff and friends of the university had the chance to meet and network before the royal visitors arrived.

Guest tours of Paragon house and its facilities were also running throughout the day and for many it was a chance to visit their former faculty's new home HQ and see how far it's progressed in recent years.

The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh watched a variety of performances and demonstrations by students from each of the university's three faculties.

These included a live dance performance by arts students and an Accident and Emergency demonstration by nursing students using a state-of-the-art electronic dummy.

Meanwhile students from the London School of Hospitality and Tourism demonstrated their skills in a specially designed temporary restaurant used to showcase techniques learnt for the larder and pastry kitchens as well as 'front of house'; including fruit carving, preparing canapés, sugar-spinning and laying tables.

University of West London Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter John said, 'Students and staff from across the university have been working hard on their contributions to the day. We were keen to showcase the mix of skills and talents of our students and highlight the breadth of courses we run at our campuses. We are extremely honoured that The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh have taken such an interest in the university and are delighted to demonstrate some of the courses we have on offer.'

The Royal visit ended as The Queen unveiled an engraved plaque to mark the official opening of the building and guests went home with a specially made souvenir cake from the day, made by hospitality students.
