General guide to qualifications
There are a range of qualifications that can be studied in the UK.

Access courses
Access courses arm students with the skills to study at University level, as well as the key skills which are essential in the world of work.
Access courses usually last one or two years and are accepted by most universities.
Foundation degrees
Foundation degrees are practical, vocational work-based qualifications.
They are designed and delivered in partnership with employers - so students are equipped with relevant skills and knowledge needed for business.

HNDs
Higher National Diplomas (HND) take two to three years to complete.
These courses are usually linked to particular vocational areas eg business, surveying, computing and hospitality.
Students can progress to the second year or final year of a degree, depending on their results.
Undergraduate degrees
Undergraduate degrees usually take three to four years to complete, although some subjects are longer, ie medicine, dentistry and engineering.
Scottish degrees take four years.
Subjects are science or arts based, students, on completion will obtain either a BA / BSc honours degree depending on the subject studied.
Degrees can be combined or taken as a single honours subject.
Postgraduate degrees
Postgraduate degress can be vocational or more academic.
They are studied after an undergraduate degree, and some are a prerequisite qualification into particular careers, ie law and accountancy.
They range from taught masters to research degrees.
Courses are assessed in a number of ways including continuous assessment and completion of a dissertation.
