How to apply

English Language Requirement for Non-EU students

If English is not your first language, or if your previous education was not conducted fully in English, you will need to provide documented evidence of your English language competence to study a course with us.

If you do not meet the requirements below, you can choose to learn English by taking one of our Pre-sessional English language courses.

Undergraduate courses

We currently only accept the IELTS English language test.

Please note that the rules regarding IELTS tests have changed – please refer to our note below.*

The standard requirement is Level B2 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR). We require a Level B2 standard in all of the elements below:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking
  • Listening

Using IELTS to demonstrate - international students normally need to meet our English language requirement with an overall IELTS 6.0, including a minimum score of 5.5 in all elements.

We will accept other English language tests which meet the IELTS equivalent.

Please check with the international office to see if we accept a test or English language course you have studied, which is not a Secure English Language Test (SELT).

The above English language requirements are for Non-EU applicants. For EU applicants we will require an overall IELTS score of 6.0, or equivalent English language test score.

If you do not meet the English language requirement you may be eligible to study an English language course, such as the eight week Pre-sessional English Language Programme.

Postgraduate courses

For postgraduate entry, international students normally need to meet our English language requirement at IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than IELTS 5.5 in each element (reading, writing, speaking and listening).

This does vary for individual courses. Please check by e-mailing us at int.app@uwl.ac.uk.

If you have studied a degree in a predominantly English speaking country, you may be exempt and not require an English language qualification.

Pre-masters qualifications studied within the UK may also be accepted.

*Please note - IELTS rules have changed:

As of 6 April 2015 the rules regarding IELTS have changed. Academic IELTS tests must be taken at a UKVI Approved Test Centre or they will no longer be honoured.

As of 23 April 2015, we only accept results from an 'IELTS for UKVI' test. Please see the list of Approved Test Centre locations from the IELTS website.
