  • How did you learn about the University of West London?

My culinary school (At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy) in Singapore has UWL on their webpage, I remember seeing it when I was deciding whether I wanted to take up the Diploma in Culinary Arts. After I started the diploma program, one of my chef instructors, who an alumni from UWL, talked to me personally about coming to London to pursue a degree after culinary school. He mentioned the University and his positive experience as well as the general experience living abroad in London. This was the initial spark that began my journey to get to UWL."

  • What attracted you to study with us?

When I got curious about the degree in culinary arts here in UWL, I took to the University’s website to look at the course modules to see if I would be interested in any of them. After an in-depth browse, I did feel quite intrigued and rather eager to find out more. When I inquired about the degree course, I was put in contact with the course leader, Shamin Talib. This further catalysed my interest as he’s an alumni as well and he’s from Malaysia, a neighbouring country of Singapore. This made me feel a safe connection and I was able to freely ask him about the course and life in the UK."

  • What were your initial impressions of the University?

My first impression of UWL is the level of care that’s put into ensuring each student has a good experience while studying. I could tell right away that I’d get the help I needed as long as I ask for it. I enjoy the fact that the University is so diverse, having students from so many different countries all around the world makes lessons interesting with people sharing stories from all backgrounds. This culminates to a cultural mixing pot of students which allows me to learn from individuals who come from countries I have never been to and may never get a chance to visit."

  • What reflections do you have on the programme after the first month of teaching?

After this first month of classes I felt that UWL and the lecturers provide us students with all the resources and help that we need to do well and avoid becoming overloaded with school work. Reflecting on my course thus far, I find that the way my modules are structured allows me to get to know my course mates well through group and project work, with a mix of individual work that lets me flourish on my own as well."
