The National Qualifications Framework

1. The NQF

The National Qualifications Framework (NQF) sets out the levels at which qualifications can be recognised. It helps learners to make informed decisions on the qualifications they need, by comparing the levels of different qualifications and identifying progression routes.

The table below shows the levels at which LCM Examinations are recognised:

NQF LCM Examinations Equivalent Standard
Level 7 FLCM in Music Performance Masters degree module
Level 6 LLCM in Music Performance and Teaching Final year undergraduate degree module
Level 5 ALCM in Music Performance and Teaching Second year undergraduate degree module
Level 4 DipLCM in Music Performance and Teaching First year undergraduate degree module
Level 3 Grades 6 - 8 A level
Level 2 Grades 4 - 5 GCSE Grades A* - C
Level 1 Grades 1 - 3 GCSE Grades D - G

Inclusion on the NQF:
  • provides official approval of our assessment methods, reporting and certification processes
  • provides recognition that the standard of LCM Exams is broadly equivalent at each grade to that of other recognised awarding bodies
  • ensures that qualifications are eligible for funding by the Learning and Skills Council, where appropriate, under Section 96 and Section 97 of the Learning and Skills Act 2000.

2. Further information

Further information about LCM's accredited qualifications, including accreditation codes and unit numbers, may be found on the National Database of Accredited Qualifications (NDAQ).

Details relating to LCM Exams can be viewed by typing 'University of West London' into the qualifications search box.

3. Looking to the future

The National Qualifications Framework is soon to be replaced by the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), which will indicate the size of qualifications as well as their standard. We are currently submitting our qualifications for inclusion in the QCF.
