Recital Grades

A new range of Recital Grades will be offered from January 2012, allowing candidates to be examined solely on musical performance. The exams comprise 4 pieces, plus either a 5th piece OR sight reading OR viva voce.

Rock Guitar Grades
Monday 26 September 2011
LCM Exams and RGT (Registry of Guitar Tutors) have launched a new range of Rock Guitar grades. 10 levels are available: Initial, Preliminary and 8 grades.

The core of all RGT rock guitar exams is the Prepared Performance section, where candidates perform the rock pieces they've chosen to play in the exam. From Preliminary Grade onwards, the examiner also tests their aural ability to reproduce riffs and recognise chords. From Grade 1 onwards, there is an improvisation section where candidates improvise a lead solo and then a rhythm guitar part to a backing track.

Performance Awards

Performance Awards provide a new opportunity for the assessment of musical performance, whereby candidates submit a DVD of their performance rather than attending an examination venue.

Performance Awards are offered at 8 levels in a wide range of subjects, and may be entered at any time of the year.

The new syllabus for drama and communication diplomas is now available. Valid from 1 June 2011, it contains revised requirements for a wide range of qualifications in both performance and teaching.

New features of the syllabus include:
  • observation of teaching at ALCM and LLCM levels;
  • the addition of a DipLCM in Teaching;
  • changes to written requirements;
  • a revised diploma in Personal and Professional Communication.

Step This Way: Percussion

The new syllabus for drama and communication grades is now available. Valid from the Winter 2010 session onwards, it contains the requirements for early learning exams, solo introductory and graded exams, group exams and graded written exams.

New features of the syllabus include:
  • the amalgamation of Folder of Work and Discussion into one component, and the addition of a Personal Reflection;
  • the opportunity for speakers of a language other than English to present one performance piece in their own language (see leaflet (pdf, 172 kb) for further details).

We are pleased to announce a new addition to our range of theoretical diplomas.

The DipMusLCM balances traditional diploma components such as harmony and analysis with new and innovative musicianship elements including comparison of recordings, performance practice considerations and essay writing.

The requirements are contained in the Music Literacy syllabus (pdf, 575 kb).

Study materials are available as free downloads from this website; these include tuition and exercises for each component of the exam, plus specimen exam papers. The extracts of recordings which are set for the exam can be streamed for on-line listening.

Drama and Communication - Validity of Syllabuses in 2010

A revised version of the Drama and Communication syllabus is in preparation, and will be published early in 2010.

The syllabus dated 2006 - 2009 will continue to be valid throughout 2010.

The revised syllabus (dated 2010 - 2013) will be valid from the Winter session of 2010 onwards. Thus in the Winter session 2010, candidates may enter for either the current or the revised syllabus.

Ensemble Syllabus

We are pleased to announce that the new Ensemble syllabus is now available. Assessments are offered at 6 levels, ranging from Grade 1/2 to DipLCM standard, and the requirements are designed to be sufficiently flexible to cater for any type of ensemble. There is no upper limit to the number of performers; the minimum number is two. Exams comprise three assessment areas:
  1. Performance
  2. Presentation
  3. Programme.

Drum Kit Handbooks

The new handbooks for graded Drum Kit exams are now available. Each handbook covers two grades, and includes everything required for the exam – a wide selection of pieces, plus rudiments, sample sight reading tests and sample aural tests. Each handbook also contains CD backing tracks and piano accompaniments for selected pieces.

We are pleased to announce that graded exams in Church Music are now offered. The syllabus, introduced on page seven of Forte Magazine 2008 - issue 3 (pdf, 660 kb), aims to promote and encourage the skills, techniques and disciplines relating to the use of music in worship. Candidates may enter with any of the following as their principal instrument – pipe organ, electronic organ, electronic keyboard, piano, classical guitar, voice - but may also perform parts of the exam on other instrument(s) if they wish.

Indian/Sikh Music

We are pleased to announce that graded exams in Indian/Sikh Music are now offered. The syllabus has been compiled by the Raj Academy of Asian Music, the world’s largest school for Sikh and traditional Indian music, and covers plucked strings (rabab, sitar and sarod), bowed strings (taus, dilruba, saranda and sarangi) and voice.
