Philip Aldred - Chief Examiner in Music

Philip Aldred was educated in the English choral tradition, and has always loved singing.

He was a Junior Exhibitioner at Trinity College of Music, London, where he studied piano, clarinet, voice and conducting.

He gained his degree from Durham University in Education and Music – studying the piano under Denis Matthews and the organ with Alan Thurlow. His passion for choral music in particular also led him to study further conducting whilst at Durham.

He has been Director of Music at various Prep., Public and State schools, and began examining for the London College of Music in 1988. He became a Senior Examiner and compiler of the theory papers (Grades 1-5), and was then appointed the Chief Examiner in Music in September 2008.

Philip is the Director of Dolce Choir – a mixed choir of 16 voices who sing a variety of music from the Renaissance to the present day.

He is also the Musical Director and founder of the Norwich Music Group, NMG – a large choral society and orchestra who perform the great choral works in the fine churches and venues in and around Norwich.

Philip is married to Jo and they live near Norwich. Together they have five children: three sons and two daughters. Both Emily and Joni were married in 2009. James and Matthew are football crazy and have represented England at schoolboy level. They are currently studying at Loughborough University. Ben is a very successful DJ in Tenerife.

Philip's other 'passion' is his football team, The Baggies – West Bromwich Albion.
