Are you a home or overseas or EU student

Are you a home, EU or overseas student?

Students applying for help with funding are categorised as either home, EU, or overseas.

Before you apply, it is important to know which of these categories you belong to.

Please note that these rules are different from those governing which category you belong to for paying fees.

Below is a basic explanation of the rules.

They refer to nationals from the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA). Find out what countries make up the:
Home or EU funded student

See the UKCISA's website on student support to find out which category you belong to (ie home or EU funded) for funding.

Note that if you are studying on a distance learning course from outside the UK, different rules may apply.

If you are applying for support in a UK country other than England, the eligibility requirements may be slightly different.

Please note some EU students may be treated as home students for funding purposes, if they meet certain requirements.

Overseas student

If you don't meet the criteria to be assessed as a home or EU student, you are classed as an overseas student.

The rules determining your eligibility for funding are complicated and are subject to change, and this website cannot cover all circumstances. If you are not sure whether you qualify for funding, please speak to an adviser at the One Stop Shop on 020 8231 2573.
