University of West London 'tops' new league table for graduate employment

Monday 21 July 2008

Official new figures reveal that University of West London has the best graduate employment record against its benchmark in the country, with almost 95% employed within six months of graduating.

HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency) compared data taken from its survey that looks at the destinations of graduates six months after leaving higher education against employment performance indicators for all universities across the UK.

University of West London, according to Times Higher Education magazine, has the 'best record for getting their students into employment' within these tables.

94.8% of graduates from University of West London were employed or in full-time education within six months of leaving their course, which exceeds the university’s benchmark figure of 89.8% by 5% - the widest margin of any of the general universities in the league tables (excluding specialist institutions) - making University of West London the best in the country in this respect for graduate recruitment. The target is calculated based on each University’s individual characteristics such as student profile and subject mix.

The news that University of West London graduates are amongst those with the highest employment prospects will no doubt be reassuring to the university’s current students, as well as those applicants who hope to begin studying at University of West London in the coming academic year.

But these figures suggest that, whilst University of West London and other universities have excellent employment prospects for their students once they graduate, many other institutions are falling far below their benchmarks.

Those anxiously awaiting exam results next month will no doubt want to know if the next few years of studying hard at their chosen university will pay off, and those who don’t get the results they had hoped for and face going through clearing to find a university place this autumn, will find these figures give them greater insight when making their choice. The news that University of West London presents the best chance of finding employment after graduation would indicate that many of these students would be wise to consider the options available at the university.

The student body at University of West London is diverse, with strong industry links and flexible study options attracting a high proportion of mature students along with applicants who want to improve their career options by studying whilst working part-time.

Commenting on the figures, Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter John said: 'Our vision is to be the foremost employer engagement university in the country and these new figures, supported by our outstanding employer and industry links, show that we are well on the way to achieving this. At University of West London we believe in helping students learn from work, learn for work and learn in work and we will continue to prepare students for their future careers from the moment they set foot in the door to the moment they leave.'

University of West London’s Director of Policy and External Communications Andrew Ward said: 'All of our programmes are applied, and we have good links with employers. We encourage students to think about careers right from the beginning. The University of West London's success in these tables proves that our strategic policy of being a business-facing university is not mere hyperbole or rhetoric.'
