		<title>Guest lecturer visits UWL International Business School students</title>

		<description>On 3 December 2012 Dr Drago Indjic (co-founding Partner of Sunningdale Capital LLP) gave a lecture to postgraduate students of the University of West London's International School of Business entitled 'Investment Management: Luxury or Commodity?'.

		Addressing current issues in financial risk management, Dr Indjic looked at different operational models for traders working in the post-2008 climate in the 'new normal' era of regular political and economic upheaval. 

		This lecture was attended by postgraduate students reading Finance, and marks the first in a series of lecturers by professionals and entrepreneurs visiting the International School of Business.

		<description>A graduate from the University's London School of Hospitality and Tourism has won a prestigious award at the British Curry Awards.

		Dipna Anand, who teaches on specialist courses in Asian cuisine at the University, won the Special Inspirational Woman Award which was presented by Prime Minister David Cameron in recognition of her contribution to the industry.

		The annual awards ceremony was founded by British entrepreneur Enam Ali MBE in 2005 in acknowledgement of the &#163;3.5bn Indian cuisine industry in the UK.

		<description>Students from London College of Music (LCM) visited pupils at Unicorn School in Kew Gardens on 19 November 2012 to record the school choir's entry for the Barnardo's National Choir Competition.

		Two music technology students, John Grainger and Paulis Grinhofs, accompanied by event organiser Pip Williams, Senior Lecturer in Music Technology, recorded and mixed the choir's renditions of two songs.

		The support provided by LCM is part of the University of West London's ongoing community engagement program, which has helped the institution forge relationships with a number of different groups in the west London area.

		<description>The Ealing Film and Music Valentines Festival 2013 (EMFF) was officially launched in the University of West London's William Barry Theatre on 12 November 2012.

		The festival, which will take place between 14 - 17 February 2013, will feature a range of cultural events over three consecutive days and nights. The event has been developed by Sara Raybould, Head of the London College of Music, Angie Bray, MP for Ealing Central and Acton, Councillor Anne Chapman of Walpole Ward in Ealing, and Ealing community groups.

		As a celebration of the rich artistic and cultural heritage in Ealing, the EMFF 2013 will showcase the many leading musicians, artists, filmmakers and lecturers that have roots in the borough. As one of the principle sponsors, the University of West London will be providing cinema facilities and supporting musical performances throughout the festival.

		<description>The University of West London recognised a wide range of industry leaders with honorary degrees at its annual graduation ceremony, which was held at London's iconic Wembley Stadium on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th November 2012.

The honoraries were joined by more than 2,500 graduates celebrating a key milestone in their educational careers, as they were recognised for their respective achievements in fields such as film, TV, music, hospitality, law and healthcare. The graduation ceremony marks the end of another strong year for the University, which reported 91&#137; of its students gaining full-time employment within six months of graduating.

Each of the University of West London's eight schools bestowed honorary degrees to recognise business success, contributions to business and cultural life and long-term support for the University's work.

		<description>The October 2012 edition of the British Journal of Midwifery (BJM) features two articles written by recent University of West London graduates. Sarah Ashley recently completed a Masters in Midwifery Practice, supervised by Professor Jane Weaver. As part of her Masters degree, Sarah conducted an exploratory study of the factors that influence multiparous women to choose a home birth. The results of this study form the basis of her BJM article. Sarah's literature review for this study appeared as a separate article in September's BJM.</description>

		<description>On Wednesday 24 October 2012 13 members of the University's Criminology Society joined Programme Leader, Donley Jack to take part in the educational trip to the Kent Police Training School. The day started with a presentation from the Operational Support and Firearms Unit officers. Students were shown various firearms currently used by the Kent Police and explained in what circumstances these were being used. The officers talked about the ongoing training that they must undertake regularly, the importance of their judgement and decision skills and how difficult it is to spot a 'fake' gun these days.</description>

		<description>Eddie Harvey, former head of jazz at the University's London College of Music (LCM), died peacefully in his sleep on the evening of Tuesday 9 October 2012 after a short illness. He was 87. Eddie ran the Jazz Department at LCM from 1985 to 2003, and continued to teach jazz piano part-time until he retired in 2010 at the age of 85. During a performance career spanning five decades, he was a famous figure in the 1950s when he crossed the divide and left a top traditional jazz group to become a founding member of the Dankworth Seven - a band that went on to become the most successful modern jazz group of their era.

Inta's winning project, which features portraits of the University's diverse local community designed in a grid, was praised by the judges as 'very innovative, especially because diversity can be an extremely difficult thing to interpret visually.'</description>

Caz Gorham and Frances Dickenson won the charity and social enterprise award for their commercial 'Dead End Kids' through the Christmas TV and Film Company on 25 September. The pair were asked by the International Planned Parenthood Federation IPPF to come up with a promo for their 'Sexual Rights &#61; Human Rights Declaration and campaign'.</description>

The Young Indian Chef Finals was a nationwide competition in India to find a young talented novice chef and was organised by the University's educational partner in India, the IIHM International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM). The IIHM is India's largest hospitality focused institution with eight locations around India. The competition highlighted the importance of south Asian cuisine and the career opportunities available to those yearning to join the industry.</description>

The original system, the Mining Course Management System (MCMS), identifies students with poor performance who are at risk of dropping out and flags this up to their lecturers and the student themselves.</description>

Dr Simon Zagorski-Thomas, began his tour on 28 November 2011 and will conclude on 6 December 2011. Simon is chairman of the Association for the Study of the Art of Record Production (ASARP) and the lectures have been timed to coincide with the 7th Annual Art of Record Production Conference at San Francisco State University. The theme of how musical performance practice has had to adapt to the changing technologies of recording practice is the subject of a research project that Simon is developing in conjunction with academics and industry professionals from around the UK as well as the US, Denmark and Norway under the auspices of ASARP.</description>
