University of West London to become 'The University of West London'

Tuesday 3 August 2010

Name change marks 150 years of education in West London as University seeks to strengthen its national and international reputation.

University of West London has been granted permission by the Privy Council to officially change its name to 'The University of West London'.

The new name will be introduced across the University accompanied by a new brand and logo. This coincides with the announcement that a new Chancellor is to be installed and the celebration of a 150 year milestone for education in Ealing. Current University of West London students and applicants will not be required to take any action and a new UCAS code will be introduced for those applying to study in 2012.

The announcement highlights a strategic shift for the University with a re-positioning of its operations onto its Ealing and Brentford site, West London campuses in West London. It also marks a change of emphasis in terms of its mission with a strong focus on employer engagement, in particular, vocational and professional education in a variety of national and international arenas.

The name change also coincides with the transfer of ownership of its Further Education provision in Reading to a new partnership (Oxford & Cherwell Valley College and the Learning and Skills Network) which took effect on Saturday 31 July 2010. The University will maintain a presence in Berkshire for its nursing and other Higher Education students.

Laurence Geller, President and CEO of Strategic Hotels and Resorts, this month took up the mantle of Chancellor-Designate as Lord Karan Bilimoria stepped down from the role after five successful years. Laurence, a high profile figure with over 45 years of experience in the hospitality industry, is also an alumnus of the University.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter John said: 'This is a natural progression for University of West London which is now a very different institution to that which was granted university status in 1992. The name change is necessary in order to align our new direction of travel with our clear brand and geographical identity which now lies at the heart of west London focusing on our two campuses in Ealing and Brentford.'

Notes

About University of West London:
  • First founded as the Lady Byron School in 1860, the education institution as it exists today was originally formed from the merger of Ealing College of Higher Education, Thames Valley College of Higher Education, the London College of Music and Queen Charlotte's College of Health Care Studies.

In 1991, this new entity was inaugurated as the Polytechnic of West London. In 1992 the Privy Council bestowed full university status and it became University of West London.

University of West London grew through a number of mergers, including with the Northwick Park School of Nursing, Riverside College of Nursing and the North West Thames Regional Health Authority's AIDS Unit in 1994, Berkshire College of Nursing and Midwifery in 1995, and with Reading College and School of Art and Design in 2004. On 31 July 2010, the further education college in Reading was smoothly transferred to a new partnership.

University of West London will proceed in changing its name to The University of West London now that formal approval from the Privy Council has been given.
