Keeping your bike safe

Here are some hints and tips for keeping your bike safe and secure:
  • Always lock your bicycle when you leave it
  • Lock your bicycle through the frame using two sold secure approved security devices
  • Lock your bike to an immovable object, such as a bike rack or ground anchors. Thieves can remove drainpipes and lift bikes off signposts
  • Stop thieves smashing the lock open by keeping the lock away from the ground. Keep the gap between bike and lock small
  • If available, use a bike stand or official cycle parking
  • Avoid leaving your bike in isolated places rather leave it where the public can see it, however try not to leave on public display for long periods too
  • Secure or remove wheels - secure removable parts; lock both the wheels and the frame together and remove smaller parts and accessories that cannot be secured
  • Take out insurance on your bike, either by extending your home contents insurance or by creating a separate policy
  • Make a note of the serial number, make and model and keep it with the photograph of the cycle

You can register your bicycle model, make and frame number at www.immobilise.com, this will help the police to recover your bike if it's stolen.
