  • Motor insurance

The University has a duty to meet legal responsibilities to ensure employees are safe behind the wheel of a car being used on business. The University holds fully comprehensive motor insurance covering damage to the vehicle and liability to third parties for specified vehicles owned by the University.

If you are using your own vehicle in connection with University business you must ensure that you have the correct type of motor insurance (to include any business usage).

Simple maintenance checks on personal cars being used for work-related trips are a necessity:

    • Oil, water, and tyre pressures before embarking on a trip
    • All lights in full working order
    • Clean driving licence

If there is an accident during a work trip and an employee or their vehicle is at fault, the University could be faced with massive fines, bad publicity and even prosecution for corporate manslaughter. The driver could face criminal prosecution for not having the correct insurance cover. We should therefore do all we can to adhere to the 'Duty of Care' issue.

  • Liability insurance

    Employer liability

This policy provides insurance, as required at law, against claims from employees who sustain an injury in the course of their employment with the University and where the cause of the injury is negligence on the part of the University or its employees.

Those covered include students on work experience / placement with the University, visiting staff, seconded staff etc. All such visiting employees should be notified to the Senior Finance Officer.

    Public liability

Provides cover against claims from third parties for injury or loss of or damage to property arising in connection with the business of the University and caused by the negligence of the University, its employees or students when engaged in curricular activities.

  • Professional indemnity

This provides cover against claims from third parties for breach of professional duty and negligent acts, errors or omissions in giving advice, design specification or report and relates solely to staff of the University, not students.

The cover includes libel, slander, and breach of confidentiality, but excludes claims arising from any matter published wholly or in part by students.
