This credit-bearing course aims to improve clinical competence, in the principles of caring for patients who are acutely ill/injured with the potential to develop critical illness, in an Emergency Care setting. Simulation of patient scenarios and clinical skills practice in the simulation centre will be key to the delivery of this course.

Recent national and professional strategies to recognise deterioration and support those in need of critical/emergency care in the emergency department will be reviewed and applied to the practice setting. A structured clinical assessment using the ABCDE approach, and a recognised tool to evaluate deterioration risk will be critically explored. Abnormal clinical findings will be linked to changes in the physiology of the acute/critically ill/injured adult.

Supportive strategies both in the assessment and management of this client group will be explored for their evidence base and the specific skills required for the management of the critically ill/injured adult delivered in the emergency care environment will be addressed.

Clinical competencies essential for care delivery, for example, recognising deterioration and care escalation, prioritisation of care, early recognition and airway, breathing and circulatory problems including the management of trauma, of sepsis, assessment and management of blood glucose disorders and skills such as 12 lead ECG recording, arterial blood gas interpretation, haemodynamic monitoring, non-invasive ventilation are required for course completion. Professional, legal, ethical and psychosocial form part of the analysis of care.

Case studies will be used to support skills learning on the course. Simulation of patient scenarios, and clinical skills practice in the simulation centre are integrated into study days.

Course requirements: Evidence of study at Level 6 (Degree level). You will be working within an emergency care clinical setting that cares for acutely unwell/injured adults.

Cost and funding: This fee covers the full course cost.

  • Sept 24 - Aug 25 fees: £1800
  • Sept 25 - Aug 26 fees: TBC

Credits: 40

Assessment method: Each of the assessment elements must be passed.

  • OSCE assessment, involving assessment care escalation and initial management of a critically ill/injured adult requiring care in an emergency setting 10%
  • Written case study 80%
  • Practice assessment competencies 10%.

  • A critical appreciation of the evidence underpinning the management of the acutely unwell/injured adult requiring enhanced/high dependency care in an emergency setting
  • Further insight into professional issues, ongoing care planning, national and professional strategies in emergency care
  • Achievement of 14 clinical competencies based in your practice area, care for the critically ill/injured adult in emergency care.
