Evidence-Based Implementation of Improvement Methods

CPD Level 7
Location
Overview

Overview

This credit-bearing course is equivalent to a traditional ‘research methods’ course. It encompasses the improvement methodology used by CLARHC (and many others eg IHI). There are two streams within this topic area – the doing and the reflecting.

The doing stream includes elements which directly relate to the practical use of the tools of improvement methodology – using PDSA cycles, process mapping your service, and creating an action effect diagram for your project.

The reflecting stream includes the essential review and implementation of what has been learned from the data, from the doing – reviewing your data weekly, using annotated SPC charts to reflect on the effects of your interventions.

This stream also includes learning opportunities and skills for evaluating and analysing data, also developing skills to write and publish the data in the best forum for each project.

This course aims to provide you with theoretical and practical knowledge about implementing evidence-based improvement in healthcare.

Course requirements: Evidence of study at Level 6 (Degree Level).

The course aims to:

  • Build knowledge about the major theories of improvement methods
  • Enable you to practically apply theories and techniques of improvement in a healthcare setting
  • Provide an understanding of what implementation means, and how to sustain any improvement or change
  • Enable you to effectively use process data gathered to monitor and reflect upon the improvements being implemented and respond appropriately to changes indicated by the data.

Specific outcomes:

  • Critically analyse models of improvement science
  • Implement small cycle change in complex and unpredictable and/or specialised contexts, with an overview of the issues governing good practice
  • Critically evaluate and adapt their implemented change based on the evidence they have gathered
  • Communicate and disseminate the evidence-based implementation of change they have completed.
