Interact in lectures using Poll Everywhere

Some of your tutors might ask you to participate in lectures with your mobile phone, tablet or laptop using a technology called Poll Everywhere

Poll Everywhere allows you to ask and answer questions posed by your lecturer and your responses to be displayed live on the classroom screen.

Frequently asked questions

Poll Everywhere supports learning by giving two-way interaction in the following way:

  • The lecturer gets a clear picture of how well the class has understood a new topic
  • All students have a fair chance of asking a question or making a comment
  • You get the opportunity to think about what you have just heard and see if you have understood
  • Your lecturer may ask you to explain your reasoning to each other in small groups which helps with articulating new ideas and hearing other points of view.
  • How do I take part?

    Answering questions

    1. You will need to bring a device which can either connect to the Internet or send text messages (mobile phone, smart phone, tablet, laptop computer).
    2. In the lecture, go to the Poll Everywhere login screen, (or open the app) and enter your tutor’s unique ID. Your tutor will tell you their ID in your lecture.  If you are participating with text messages, text your tutor’s ID to the number shown in the lecture.
    3. As your tutor displays the question on screen, respond using your mobile device.  The class responses are displayed live.

    Asking your own questions

Your lecturer might ask you to design some of your own questions and present them to the class.  To do this you will need to request an account by completing the Poll Everywhere Account Request Form.

We aim to create accounts the same working day.

  • What information can my tutor see about me?

When you answer questions, your responses are anonymous so your tutor cannot see which answers you gave, but they get an overall picture of how well the class is doing.

  • Is it free?

It is free if you connect your smart phone, laptop or tablet to the university Wifi.  If you participate by text message standard network rates apply, so if you pay for your text messages you will be charged for each message you send.

  • What if I don’t have a mobile device I can use?

Your tutor may ask the class to work in pairs or to share a device.  Either way your learning will not be affected.
