Course detail & modules

As a construction project manager, you will learn to handle the planning, coordination, and successful execution of construction projects.

The projects you work on could range from agricultural, residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, civil, or environmental.

The course provides a broad, thorough foundation in the fundamentals required for successfully organising and managing construction projects; such as strong communication skills, comprehensive knowledge of the building process and the ability to problem-solve.

You will also study the latest technology implementation and innovation, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) and 3D printing.

The course will equip you with advanced knowledge and skills in:  

  • sustainable built environment development 
  • construction project management 
  • integrated and interoperable information management in construction projects 
  • environmentally-friendly design and construction 
  • sustainable financial and procurement management in construction projects.

Pre-Masters (Extended Masters and Enhanced Extended Masters)

Our Extended Masters and Enhanced Extended Masters courses are intended for students who already have an undergraduate degree but don't meet the entry requirements to study for a Masters degree.

Over a full-time semester, you will study four modules specially designed to improve your academic and English language skills:

  • Advanced Study Skills
  • Critical Thinking, Analysis and Evaluation
  • Statistics
  • English (Business English on the Enhanced course)

Once completed, you will progress directly onto the core Masters course.

What's the difference between an Extended Masters and an Enhanced Extended Masters?

The Enhanced Extended Masters is similar to the Extended Masters but with a greater focus on improving your English skills. It also includes a Business English module which will allow you to gain a full understanding of this critical subject area.

    This module will develop your knowledge and understanding of the construction project processes associated with various procurement methods. You will learn to interpret the needs of different client groups, to develop procurement strategies and to apply tools and techniques to support the implementation of those strategies. The module will also cover risk controlling and management in construction project processes.

  • Sustainable Development of the Built Environment

    This module will enhance your understanding and skills in sustainable development of the built environment. You will cover assessment and evaluation methods, as well as various energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies used in modern building projects.

  • Construction Risk Management

    On this module you will study risk management processes within construction projects. You will have an overview of the essential risk-control issues as they relate to processes, requirements and management.

  • Research Methods

  • People and Organisation Management in Construction

    This module emphasises the importance of diagnostic skills in understanding organisations. It is designed to provide you with awareness of the issues which need to be considered when managing people at work. The aim is to develop an analytical approach to understanding organisations and the managerial function with reference to the position and role of construction and project managers. It will carry you from a state of familiarity with tasks to a more active awareness of their links with people and organisations.

  • Construction Innovation and BIM

    On this module you'll look into how modern technology can promote the efficiency of building and construction projects, both at present and potentially in future. You'll consider how to manage R&D activities and implement new technologies in the construction industry, and how the implementation of BIM and other digital technology can enhance building design, construction and management.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

You should have an honours degree (2:2 or above) in a built environment subject, including: 

  • construction project management 
  • construction management 
  • quantity surveying 
  • building surveying  
  • architecture 
  • architectural technology  
  • civil and environmental engineering  
  • property management 
  • urban development.

We may also offer you a place based on relevant experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applications are considered individually.

Extended Masters Degree

To study the Extended Masters programme you will need:

  • a Bachelor's degree
  • international students need to meet our English language requirements of IELTS 6.5 or above and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
Enhanced Extended Masters Degree

To study the Enhanced Extended Masters programme you will need:

  • a Bachelor's degree
  • international students must meet our English language requirements at IELTS 6.0 or above, and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).

Please note: If you qualify for a regular Masters, you will not be accepted on the Extended Masters or Enhanced Extended Masters course.

You need to meet our English language requirement of IELTS 6.5 overall score, with a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).. Visit our English language requirements page for information on other English language tests we accept.

You also need Level 6 qualifications at the same level as UK applicants. In some countries where teaching is in English, we may accept local qualifications. Check for local equivalents.

If you are studying a Masters course you may be eligible to apply for a Postgraduate Loan, this may help contribute towards your course fees and living costs.

I’m a Chartered Facilities Manager and Chartered Construction Manager with over six years of teaching and learning experience in the UK Higher Education with speciality in Construction Project Management and Facilities management. I completed a PhD in Construction Management & Economics at the London South Bank University. I’m currently a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader in Construction Project Management at the University of West London. I have excellent knowledge and understanding of Construction Project Management and Facilities Management principles and practice. I have experience in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I have an excellent record of accomplishment of working to meet tight deadlines. I’m actively involved in Teaching and Learning, Research and Knowledge Transfer, as well as Administration, Management, and Leadership roles.

Availability of placements - if you choose a course with placement/internship route we would like to advise you that if a placement/internship opportunity does not arise when you are expected to undertake the placement then the University will automatically transfer you to the non-internship route, this is to ensure you are still successful in being awarded a degree.
