Ealing student takeover at UWL
A student from The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls in Ealing took over the reins at the University of West London (UWL) as part of the annual Takeover Challenge Day.
Nina Juma, who is currently studying for her A-levels, took on a role in the University’s Outreach Team for the day to gain a valuable insight about how the University reaches out to the local community.
Takeover Day provides young people with opportunities to experience real-life decision-making in the workplace, while organisations benefit from a fresh perspective on their work.
Speaking about the experience, Nina said:
I learnt how to make important decisions within a workplace and communicate within a group to deliver projects for young people.
Jenny Tait, Outreach Team Leader at UWL, said:
Takeover Day provided an opportunity for a local young person to explore the work my team does and make decisions that impact the direction it takes. Putting the power in their hands, hearing a different perspective, really enhanced our work with young people, as it was led, and directly influenced, by a young person.
In last two years, thousands of children have taken part in Takeover Day – stepping into the shoes of a wide range of adult jobs including everything from MPs, mayors, TV presenters and teachers to chief executives, business leaders and government officials.
