A composer and musician who has written for global audiences and helped educate generations of performers has received an honorary degree from the University of West London.

John Howard - a composer, educator, and conductor who has had his pieces performed by distinguished players across the globe – was made an Honorary Doctor of Music in a graduation ceremony at Twickenham Stadium this week in recognition of his ongoing contributions to the creative industries.

Since studying music at the University of Durham, he went on to have significant influence in the education sector while also drawing on his love for Chinese music to contribute to the creation of new arrangements around the world.

Over the past 30 years, John has produced more than 75 works, with commissions from the English Brass Ensemble, Bronwen Naish, and Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band, to the Medici String Quartet, and Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

Following a passion for composition and creativity, his international teaching has also led him to work with the Singapore National Arts Council on new education projects, contribute to a host of music publications, and adjudicate at competitions and festivals around the world.

John enjoyed a career in teaching internationally before becoming Professor and Head of Research at UWL’s London College of Music and going on to serve as Director of London College of Music Examinations until his retirement in 2019.

After several years as Director of London College of Music Examinations (LCME), he is now Emeritus Professor at UWL and Ambassador for LCME.

Speaking about his contribution to music and education, Professor Nicholas McKay, Director of LCM, said:

John Howard has enjoyed a wonderfully varied and inspiring career, using his vast talents in the field of composition and teaching to truly make his mark on education and creativity in composition right across the world."

The impact of his vision, musicianship, and passion for education really took hold here at LCME and he has helped broaden so many minds and expand the reach of the body globally."

John will always be part of the foundation and continuing story of the London College Music and its examinations body while we strive to provide the very best education and support to our students as they forge their own careers as creatives and performers."
