UWL Advertising & PR students Go Above+Beyond
University of West London students recently participated in Advertising Unlocked, an annual event organised by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA) in which advertising agencies open their doors to aspiring professionals.
On Friday 28 September, UWL BA (Hons) Advertising & Public Relations students visited creative agency Above+Beyond. The afternoon consisted of an overview of The Beyond Collective, a showcase of Above+Beyond’s ground-breaking campaigns, as well as a cross-functional ‘speed date’, where students got to talk to people in a variety of roles across the agency.
Third-year students found the discussions very helpful in terms of career development.
Ellis Curran commented, ‘The day was a thoroughly enriching experience and I discovered new career pathways in advertising based on my conversations.’
His classmate, Alex Nimirceag agreed wholeheartedly, adding, ‘The visit changed my perspective on the ad world and agencies in general.’
Melpomeni Kliafa stated, ‘The day helped me understand what I really want out of a career and the Above+Beyond team were really encouraging.’
Lucy Freedman, Above+Beyond Marketing Manager, organised the day for just this purpose—to give students the chance to find out about the opportunities available in the dynamic creative communications sector.
Lucy stated, ‘It was great to see the students talking with the diverse individuals that make up our team, and we all loved hearing from the next generation of talent. As an agency, being in tune with the world beyond the adland bubble is so important to creating work that resonates with audiences, and embracing new talent is key to staying fresh, both as an organisation and as an individual professional.’
Course Leader Kristin Brewe commented, ‘It’s agencies like Above+Beyond that help today’s students become tomorrow’s successful professionals. The IPA and its member agencies should be lauded for opening doors during Advertising Unlocked. Our students are lucky to be in London, so that they can take part in such great events.’
Third-year student Luke Dixon concluded, ‘Advertising Unlocked has been such a great way to not only take a look at the agencies we visit, but also to learn about how they work and how they could shape our future careers. I think Above+Beyond has definitely enlightened us about independent agencies’ strengths.’
