UWL honours alumnus Freddie Mercury with spectacular new artwork ahead of film release
This week the University of West London is celebrating its world famous alumnus, Freddie Mercury, by joining forces with outdoor media specialist Rapport, Twentieth Century Fox, Regency Enterprises and Global Street Art Agency to unveil a striking and highly visible mural of his image on our Paragon Building.
The epic mural has been hand-painted by world-renowned street art agency, Global Street Art and took just four days to complete. It will remain in place throughout the month of October on the Paragon building, which is the main hub of the University’s Brentford campus and student accommodation, and provides the perfect site for ultimate impact.
The installation coincides with the release of Twentieth Century Fox and Regency Enterprises’ long-awaited film, Bohemian Rhapsody. In cinemas from 24 October, the film is a celebration of legendary British rock band Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer, Freddie Mercury.
Freddie earned a diploma in Art & Graphic Design at Ealing Art College, now the London School of Film, Media and Design at UWL. He would later go on to use his art skills to design the Queen heraldic arms.
Professor Peter John, Vice-Chancellor at the University of West London said: ‘We are always delighted to celebrate our alumni, but especially one as popular and well-known as Freddie Mercury. His musical legacy and his extraordinary personality, which defied stereotypes and shattered convention, means he is one of the most beloved and iconic entertainers of our time. We are proud to be part of this project and to be able to honour Freddie in such a visually stunning, innovative and creative way.’
Lee Bofkin, Co-Founder Global Street Art Agency said: 'This was a huge undertaking working with our incredible crew of artists and state-of-the-art painting technology. UWL was incredibly supportive and Rapport were a pleasure to work with, as always. We hope that this mural does justice to the movie, which we already know is going to be a smash!
Paul Doherty, Rapport said: 'We are really pleased to be working on such an exciting project for Twentieth Century Fox and Regency Enterprises, alongside the University of West London. This is an exciting out-of-home (OOH) campaign; with the placement able to hit a mass audience, and an impressively unique and memorable piece of artwork being created. We have worked with Global Street Art previously on successful OOH projects, such as Assassins Creed, the Kingsman franchise and Logan HE, and their work is always of the highest calibre.'
Twentieth Century Fox and Regency Enterprises present Bohemian Rhapsody, in cinemas in UK and Ireland on 24 October.
