intro

Robyn Patrick, who is studying for a MMus in Composition for Film and TV at UWL’s London College of Music (LCM), was recently one of 150 people shortlisted in international orchestral film scoring contest The Cue Tube Score Relief 2024. Entrants had to re-score a short animation clip called ‘Wing It’.

The Cue Tube provides and produces films for composers and sound designers to use for professional development. Score Relief raises money for charity through their voluntary fundraiser campaign for In Place of War, a global organisation using creativity as a tool for positive change in places of conflict.

Robyn used the Logic Pro BBC Orchestra Core Plug-in to create her re-score. Comments from the judges about her music were, “Refreshing approach! Great pacing. Dynamic storytelling.”

I had fun composing my piece and am really happy with the results. Before coming to UWL, I would not have had the confidence to enter this competition."

Robyn said.

I didn’t have much experience in composition for media and with the help of my tutors and our practical composition module, I've improved and learned so much very quickly.”

Head of Composition at LCM Dr Simone Spagnolo commented:

Participating in composition competitions is a challenging yet formative part of every young composer’s journey.

They often feature hundreds of participants, and being shortlisted demonstrates talent, creativity and professionalism. Very warm congratulations to Robyn! Achievements of this kind open future doors and give strength to our composition community.”

The winner of Score Relief gets their re-score performed and recorded by the Northern Film Orchestra at award-winning performance space Stoller Hall in Manchester. The four runners-up win a session prize, enabling them to work with real musicians on a piece of music of their choice.
