Students lead guided tours of Ealing site for Open House Festival 2024

Intro

As part of Open House Festival 2024, the University of West London offered free guided tours of its Ealing site, led by some of our current students, allowing members of the public to discover more about the University’s rich history through exploration of the archives and libraries, and how its facilities have been transformed and renovated in recent years.

Open House Festival is an initiative run by Open City, a charity that encourages access to London’s diverse architecture for public viewing and education. UWL was delighted to open its doors to the public, who were able to view the modern campus and experience the excellent facilities firsthand. With eight guided tours over two days, over 30 people got to see what UWL has to offer.

UWL’s enthusiastic student ambassadors attended the event to welcome guests and lead the tours. Law student Shrushti said:

I, of course, love the mock court room that we have; it’s actually very realistic! Apart from that, [St Mary’s Road] is a very lively campus – I love this campus.”

UWL has a rich history spanning more than 150 years in education and professional training. The University has played an important role in shaping the educational, cultural, and economic landscape of West London since its early days. Over time, partnerships with top academic institutions, specialist training providers, and industry experts have made it what it is today: a university focused on preparing students for successful careers.

Mary, the archivist at UWL, said:

There’s a lot of focus on UWL being a post-1992 university and I think that does a disservice to the long history of the educational institution it has been and has developed into over the years, as well as the success the institution and its predecessors have had in making education more accessible.”

The University's campus has undergone significant development in the past decade, introducing modern teaching, learning, and social spaces to inspire learning and community. These include industry-standard facilities like a flight simulator and hospital suites, a radio studio, professional labs, and the Paul Hamlyn library. The Heathrow Archive and Pillars, a fine dining training restaurant, can also be found at UWL.

One of our visitors, Linda, said:

I worked here many years ago, and it’s been very interesting to see all the changes that have taken place and all the improvements that have been made for students."
