Professor Kourosh Behzadian (BSc, MSc, PhD, FHEA, FICE, FCIWEM, CEng, C.WEM) is a Professor of Smart Infrastructure and Course Leader of BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering and MSc Civil Engineering in the University of West London. He is an expert in hydro-systems engineering, management and operations research, a Chartered Civil Engineer by the Engineering Council, Fellow of ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers), Fellow of CIWEM (Chartered Institution of Water & Environmental Management), Chartered Water and Environmental Manager (C.WEM) by CIWEM, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK, Editor of Sustainable Environment, Taylor & Francis Group, Editorial Panel for Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Municipal Engineer, Honorary staff at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) at University College London (UCL), Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI) Alumni at Brown University in Providence, RI.

Prior to joining the University of West London, he was working as Research Fellow at Centre for Water Systems, University of Exeter for four years and before that he was working as Assistant Professor at Amirkabir University of Technology for four years. He has worked on several research projects in the UK, Europe, America and the Middle East. Some of the projects that he has been working on in recent ten years are: TRUST (Transitions to the Urban Water Services of Tomorrow) FP7-265122 funded by the EU and 'Local Nexus Network of Food, Energy and Water' EPSRC EP/M017753/1 funded by EPSRC in the UK and led by University of Oxford, Strategic planning of urban water reuse interventions for community resilience led by UWL and funded by Frontiers of Engineering for Development grant from the Royal Academy of Engineering, OVERCOME digital innOVation in climatE hazaRd early warning and related disease prevention for COMmunity capacity building and rEsilience led by University of Exeter and funded by EPSRC/UKRI/GCRF Digital Innovation for Development in Africa (DIDA): phase 1, EP/T030089/1 and SYMBIOTIC Social-industrial sYmbiosis of Malaysia’s BIO-plasTIC wastes led by LEAP Micro AD Ltd and funded by innovate UK Grand Challenge 2020: Phase 1, TS/T016310/1 Project number 134002 and Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship awarded by Royal Academy of Engineering. He has (co)authored over 190 peer-reviewed journal papers, conference papers and technical reports (Google Scholar). He has also supervised over 40 postgraduate research students in various fields of civil engineering (water engineering, hydraulic structures, environmental engineering and construction management).

His research interests cover a wide range of topics in water and environment engineering and construction management, in particular, including

  • Optimal design/rehabilitation and operation of water distribution/sewer systems
  • Urban flood and floodplain control management
  • Real-time control and smart equipment in water and environmental systems
  • GIS applications in water resources management
  • Application of artificial intelligence and machine learning (eg ANN) in hydro-systems
  •  Landfill site selection for solid waste management

Teaching

I am a Professor of Smart Infrastructure in the School of Computing and Engineering and an expert in hydro-systems engineering, management and operations. I have worked on research projects in the UK, Europe, America and the Middle East. I have (co)authored over 80 peer-reviewed journal papers, conference papers and technical reports, and I am the editor of the Journal of Cogent Environmental Science.
