Biography:

 

Dr Kourosh Behzadian (BSc, MSc, PhD, CEng, MCIWEM, C.WEM, FHEA) is Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering, an expert in Hydrosystems Engineering and Management, Geotechnical Design and Operations Research, a Chartered Civil Engineer by the Engineering Council, a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager by the Chartered Institution of Water & Environmental Management, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK, Editor of the Journal of Cogent Environmental Science, Taylor & Francis Group, Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Exeter, Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI) Alumni at Brown University.

Prior to joining the University of West London, he was working as research fellow at the University of Exeter for four years and before that he was working as assistant professor at Amirkabir University of Technology for four years. He has worked on several research projects in the UK, Europe, America and the Middle East. The projects that he has been working on in recent years are: TRUST (Transitions to the Urban Water Services of Tomorrow) funded by the EU and 'Local Nexus Network of Food, Energy and Water' funded by EPSRC in the UK and led by University of Oxford. He has (co)authored over 80 peer-reviewed journal papers, conference papers and technical reports. He has also supervised over 25 postgraduate students in various fields of civil engineering (water engineering, hydraulic structures, environmental engineering and construction management).

Dr Behzadian has taught a number of undergraduate/postgraduate civil engineering modules mainly related to water and environmental engineering, hydraulics, soil mechanics and geotechnics in the UK and abroad. He is currently the module leader for the following modules at the University of West London: Fluid Mechanics, Soil Mechanics, Geotechnical Design, Advanced Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering Practice, Environmental Protection Engineering, Hydraulic and Environmental Protection.

His research interests cover a wide range of topics in water and environment engineering and construction management, in particular, including

  • Optimal design/rehabilitation and operation of water distribution/sewer systems
  • Urban flood and floodplain control management
  • Real-time control and smart equipment in water and environmental systems
  • GIS applications in water resources management
  • Application of artificial intelligence and machine learning (e.g. ANN) in hydro-systems
  •  Landfill site selection for solid waste management
