BA, MA, American University of Beirut (Lebanon)
New York born Jad Azkoul is first prize winner of the Affiliate Artists Competition in New York, and recipient of the Order of the Cedar, a knighthood from the Lebanese government for his contribution to music.
He played rock guitar throughout his school years, but only turned to full time music study after doing a BA and MA in experimental psychology at the American University of Beirut. Then in Boston he did a two-year jazz programme at the Berklee College of Music, before moving to Paris to take up classical guitar and composition for five years.
He next went to Montevideo, Uruguay, for three years to replace the old techniques with the new school of guitar developed by the virtuoso guitarist and composer, Abel Carlevaro. The Maestro later chose him as one of his privileged teaching assistants.
Jad concertizes worldwide, adjudicates at international guitar competitions, and is sought after for his expertise in teaching. In France, he conducts two summer workshops annually.
The French label Forlane produced two highly acclaimed CDs that are available on many Internet sites including Spotify, iTunes, and Amazon.
Before teaching at the London College of Music he taught in Washington, DC at the American University, and in Geneva, Switzerland at the Conservatoire Populaire de Musique, Danse et Théâtre.
He has been commissioned to write a monthly series of articles on the guitar technique he teaches for the British magazine, Classical Guitar.
Jad is fluent in four languages. He has two musical sons: the younger, Mike, is a talented hip-hop artist (Dr. Koul) while the older, Julian, is a very fine violinist, with whom he has formed a violin and guitar duo.
