Simon leads a busy career as a composer, conductor, organist, and lecturer. His pedagogical expertise includes harmony and counterpoint, modal polyphony, graphic analysis, and orchestration.
Simon's compositions are published by Gendai (Japan) and LCM Exams (London). His works have been premiered at the North Wales International Music Festival, the Chester Festival, the Bangor New Music Festival, and, of course, the LCM-Live concert series. Simon enjoys writing not only for professional ensembles, including Ensemble Cymru (Resident Ensemble at Bangor University) and the Konvalia String Quartet (London), but also for his degree students.
Simon is conductor of the LCM Camerata, an orchestra which he founded in 2012. In his capacity of musical director, Simon is founder and co-ordinator of several annual competitions for LCM students, including the LCM Advanced Orchestration Competition, the LCM Concerto Competition, and the LCM Composition Competition. With the support of the orchestra, Simon also supervises undergraduates and postgraduates in preparation for their LCM Conducting Diplomas.
Simon’s out-reach work has included adjudicating performance competitions, and delivering composition workshops, at Twyford School, Acton. More recently, he has forged strong links with local churches, and has developed the LCM Organ Scholarship in collaboration with St Thomas the Apostle Church, Hanwell.
An experienced practitioner in the field of curriculum design and development, Simon was Course Leader of the LCM’s MMus in Performance (2006-2017), and principal author of the University’s DMus degree (2010-2012). He is now Course Tutor to Service Musicians from the Band of the Coldstream Guards and other distinguished military ensembles.
