About Pyramid

Pyramid clubs are special clubs for children who are shy, quiet, withdrawn and who may feel anxious about home or school situations.

On this page you will find out more about how Pyramid can help children at primary school.

Over the 10 weeks of the Pyramid club there was a significant change in A’s behaviour and she became much more approachable and friendly, no longer making unkind comments to other children. Her teacher had noticed a positive change in her behaviour. Best of all, she was happier, more relaxed and playing with other children!

Challenges faced

Long shot of school corridor

Moving to a more formal style of schooling at the age of seven can unearth or cause difficulties for some children.

They are expected to take more responsibility for their learning, working independently of the teacher and more with their peers.

For those who find it difficult to ask for help, it can become a worrying time.  Additionally, some children start to worry a lot about family or other problems at this age.

How children respond

From a child-development point of view, the key need of children of this age is belonging to groups. Children start to value themselves in terms of the groups that they belong to, so not being part of a group can be upsetting.

Falling out with friends or being bullied by others can cause some children to withdraw into themselves and find it even more difficult to start friendships. Without those positive friendships, they are more likely to be picked upon or bullied, setting up a vicious downward spiral.

Pyramid clubs help by offering a safe place for sharing fears and concerns and testing out friendship-making skills. Being with children who are in a similar situation provides a peer support group, both within the club and more widely during the school day.
