Overview

The National Institute for Health Research (2019) describes a systematic review as: ‘Evidence-based healthcare relies on the availability of the best evidence upon which patient-centred clinical decisions can be made.

Reviews make a significant contribution to this by attempting to identify the totality of evidence available, appraising and then summarising this evidence.’

This credit-bearing course will explore the principles and methods of undertaking a systematic review.

Course requirements:

  • For students undertaking MSc Nursing (Top-Up): Completion of a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing.
  • For all other students: Evidence of completion of 100 credits at Level 7 (a maximum of 20 credits at Level 6 may be considered).

Cost and funding: This cost covers the full course fee.

  • Sept 24 - Aug 25 fees: £900
  • Sept 25 - Aug 26 fees: TBC

Credits: 20

Assessment method: Development of a systematic review protocol.

Study dates and times

This course is taught on day release, select a start date to see the study days:

The sessions are a mix of face-to-face and online. Face-to-face study days are from 9 am to 5 pm while online sessions last for half a day.

Online sessions for the course commencing 18th September 2024: 2nd October, 9th October, 30th October, 27th November.

Online sessions for the course commencing 5th February 2025: 12th February, 19th February, 19th March, 9th April.

The course will focus on:

  • Developing a comprehensive understanding of the purpose of systematic reviews
  • Development of the knowledge and skills needed to construct a systematic review protocol.

It will:

  • Review the principles and applicability of evidence-based healthcare to your own clinical specialism
  • Critically appraise both quantitative and qualitative studies
  • Explore the process of research synthesis
  • Develop focused questions appropriate for systematic review of effectiveness or patient/staff experience.

Professor Rowan Myron

I am an experienced researcher, writer, presenter and manager with expertise in psychology, improvement science and knowledge mobilisation in healthcare. I use innovative techniques to build team dynamics with staff, researchers and patients. I also lead the University's doctoral research programmes, and have a strong interest in using new technologies to engage frontline staff in learning opportunities.
