  • What do I need in order to study design?

    Heartspace - in the heart of the University of West London's Ealing site.

    The entry requirements for each undergraduate design course vary, so please check the relevant course page for full details. For example, on our Visual Effects (VFX), you may be required to submit a portfolio.

    If you do not have quite the right grades or subjects at A-Level to begin your degree, then why not consider a foundation-year course at the University of West London? All of our degrees in this area are available as four-year courses, with the first year providing you with the grounding you need to progress successfully to level 4.

Digital print bureau

Digital Print Bureau

The Digital Print Bureau has high-tech workstations, fully colour-calibrated professional screens and a wealth of industry-standard software. Students can create professional-grade images from our printers and also have access to top-range scanning machines.

Printmaking design studio

Printmaking design studio

Our printmaking design studio holds workshops on paper screen printing, lino printing, mono printing, dry point etching and bookbinding. These tools allow students to experiment with graphic reproduction, creating their own original designs.

Technical demonstrators

Our students can mine the expertise of our dedicated Technical Demonstrators through demos like this one with our motion capture system. These hands-on lessons give students practice using the latest technology used in industry.

Media Resource Centre

Media Resource Centre

Our Media Resource Centre is available to all LSFMD students for free. We hold a variety of cameras, lights, sound equipment and recording devices. Students can also loan equipment demonstrated in class.

Photographic darkroom

We have facilities for analogue processing and printing, from 35mm up to 5’x4”. We give training on a wide range of traditional printing skills as well as alternative processes.

Here are a few potential options depending on what field of design you study:

Fashion: fashion designer, accessories designer, materials developer, pattern cutter

Games Design and Animation: visual effects, motion graphics, graphic design, web design
