Overview

This credit-bearing continuing professional development course will explore global and national perspectives of dementia and dementia care provisions in the UK and across the world.

It will examine the evidence underpinning the challenges that face different nations and relevant policy approaches (e.g. by the WHO, OECD, national dementia strategies) taken to address pertinent issues such as those related to dementia diagnosis, treatment, care, and support.

This course will provide a supportive and intellectually challenging environment within which students develop a critical awareness of dementia in a global context.

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast global, regional, and national patterns and trends of dementia, and synthesise findings to communicate to non/specialist audiences.
  2. Critically examine the distribution and determinants of dementia across different societal groups within and across national contexts, including older adults, women and migrant and minority ethnic groups, and the potential for developing innovative evidence-based strategies to promote healthy lifestyle choices.
  3. Assess the economic, health and social care policy implications of dementia globally, regionally, and nationally.
  4. Evaluate the current state of dementia recognition and assessment, available interventions, health and social care provisions, and informal care support in a global context, and develop critiques of them.

Entry requirements

We look for students who show enthusiasm and a passion for the subject through previous study or professional experience.

You should have an honours degree (2:2 or above) from a UK university or equivalent in a related subject (such as nursing, occupational therapy, social work, psychology, or similar) and relevant work experience (such as health, social, independent, or voluntary sector care). Or you may be planning a career working in or leading dementia care services.

If you do not have a 2.2 Honours degree or international equivalent in a related subject, then we may offer you a place based on relevant work experience and training in dementia care.

Dr Snorri Bjorn Rafnsson

Dr Snorri Bjorn Rafnsson trained in epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh and later conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Edinburgh and University College London (UCL). He was Research Fellow at the Centre for Population Health Sciences at the University of Edinburgh from 2007-2010; Senior Epidemiologist at the Hellenic Health Foundation (HHF) in Athens, Greece, from 2010-2013.

Dr Snorri Bjorn Rafnsson trained in epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh and later conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Edinburgh and University College London (UCL).
