Can you negotiate? How to develop your enterprise mindset
Negotiation can occur in business decisions or in everyday situations. It’s the method of settling differences. But what skills do you need to negotiate and reach your desired outcome?
It can be a tough process learning to negotiate effectively, but it’s a skill that is extremely useful in career and development in the world of business. In fact, being able to develop an enterprise mindset using negotiation skills will set you up for life post-graduation, where you may need them to progress in your chosen career path.
On Thursday 15 July the Careers Team will be hosting a webinar to guide you through the, sometimes tricky, process of negotiation. Here are three of the top three things you can learn about by attending.
Negotiating skills can be learnt
Just like any other skill, negotiating is one you can learn to develop and strengthen - and it is often combined with other useful attributes such as communication, listening, non-verbal communication and preparation and planning. The workshop will teach you how to develop and improve these areas to create an enterprise mindset.
Confidence is key
Convincing others of your point of view is the goal, but without confidence you won’t get very far. A lot of negotiation revolves around the way in which you present yourself verbally and non-verbally. There are some simple techniques you can use to become confident and assertive in your message, and so improving your overall negotiation skills – achieving the most desirable outcome.
Setting the tone
An important part of negotiation begins before the actual conversation starts. Planning in advance and knowing what you want will lay the foundations for a favourable outcome. So if you want to achieve a successful negotiation, planning how to set the tone will help you get there.
