CLBS students gain industry insights at Europe’s largest annual accounting event
Intro
Twenty five accounting students from UWL’s Claude Littner Business School (CLBS) recently visited Accountex, Europe’s largest annual business event for the accounting and finance profession, at ExCel London.
Article body
Supported by the UK’s leading accountancy associations, Accountex brought together over 8,000 accounting and finance professionals. Our students could hear from over 180 industry-leading speakers in a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited education programme and earn up to 16 hours of CPD, discover innovative accounting software and services and network with like-minded professionals.
At the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) stand, students met members and practitioners and took pictures with the ‘Tuk Tuk to Success’, reminding them that with the globally recognised ACCA qualification they will be able to work in any sector anywhere in the world.
Talks attended by the students included industry insights and tech trends, sustainable finance, tips for starting a successful accounting practice, the accountant’s role in fighting cyber-crime, and improving communication skills. They also actively engaged in demonstrations of popular accounting software such as Sage, Xero, QuickBooks and TaxCalc and innovative tools like Ecologi Zero, a carbon footprint calculator.
I had an excellent time interacting with accounting professionals and getting informed about practical and technological updates. As an international student new to the UK, this certainly was an eye-opener!”
said Shafinaz Shaikh, a Level 4 BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance student.
The highlight for me was a session called ‘Communicate as an introvert in an extroverts’ world. I learned about the different types of introverts and their communication styles. Accountants often tend to be introverted and the speaker gave a lot of insights on how to communicate effectively using examples from her professional life.”
said Obianuju Jane Uzonwanne, a student on the MA Strategic Financial Management course.
It was heartening to see our students actively learning outside the classroom, building up their professional networks and engaging with the profession,”
said Dr Dinusha Weerawardane, Head of Accounting and Finance.
The sessions at Accountex were an invaluable resource for any accountancy professional and I am grateful to my colleagues Erfan Nomaan and Ayo Olaoshun for joining this visit and supporting with signposting key talks for our students.”
