Disclosing your disability
Disclosing your disability
Did you know we have 2,079 students at UWL who have disclosed a disability?
We want to help you as much as possible to ensure you have access to the best possible learning support and resources and you can do this by registering with the Wellbeing team and getting an Individual Support Plan (ISP).
So how does it work? Through conversation with you and reviewing your medical/diagnostic evidence, we come up with an Individual Support Plan (ISP) tailored to your needs outlining the support that you want and are happy to receive.
Creating an ISP is a collaborative process with you at the heart of it! The aim is to help inform key colleagues at the university about some of the challenges you may face in your studies due to your disability. Reasonable adjustments in your ISP could include things like extra time in exams, learning materials uploaded on the VLE in advance, extended library loans, alternative assessments, or communication strategies.
We can also help you apply for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) which provides additional funding to help you in your studies. This includes things like contributing towards the cost of a laptop, paying for Study Skills sessions with a Dyslexia specialist, or Mental Health Mentoring which is a bit like coaching.
Why should I do this? Students who engage in the support that they are eligible to typically perform better in their studies and achieve better degree outcomes than those eligible for support but decide to accept any support. It also makes your life a lot easier and less stressful as you end up working smarter, not harder.
To gain access to this support, you will need to register with the Disability & Mental Health Team which you can do so online via the Student Hub.
Remember you are in full control of disclosing any sensitive information about your disability. We will only share this information with key staff to implement your support if you consent for us to do so. You can change your mind around your consent at any time.
