Emergence 2022 – UWL BA Photography and BA Visual Effects degree show

Some 600 people attended the private view for Emergence 2022, which took place at the Espacio Gallery in Benthal Green on 20 June.

“The work looked incredible," says BA Photography Course Leader Peter Bennett. “We decided to print at a very large scale and allow plenty of breathing space between each artwork.”

This decision was inspired by a recent student visit to the internationally renowned Waddington Custot gallery in Cork Street, where gallery director Jacob Twyford discussed his approach to gallery exhibitions with students.

The largest print on show, by Mihail Stanescu, was 3.5 metres long. He used split-screen photography to produce an extended record of time in London’s busy Oxford Street. Mihail says that seeing his images as prints was an “otherworldly” experience.

“I could see details that were not visible on screen because of the ultra-panoramic format,” he continues. “Prints are paramount to offering a great experience and sharing your message with the others. Screens will not be enough.”

Other pieces included Holly Chapman’s multiple Polaroids presenting her experiences of coming out of lockdown. “I shot the project throughout the year,” Holly says, adding that it's a photographic response to US comedian Bo Burnham's film "Inside". “As I am a music lover, I added song lyrics to the images to describe how I was feeling.”

Visual Effects moving image work was shown on a large flat screen in the gallery’s street-facing window. This attracted many passers-by into the gallery, and students received numerous enquiries from Shoreditch design agencies and production companies.

For her major project, Isabel Gill De Barros Leonel produced a large-format triptych, video pieces, and 3d prints. Her work combined 3d scans of people and computer-generated plant life. Isabel called her project Nature’s Army.

“By creatively exploring scans of people using photogrammetry, I exploited its glitches and imperfections,” Isabel says. “Mimicking the way nature seeps through the cracks in the pavement I filled the imperfections of the scans with models of imaginary plants. This work shows ‘Nature’s an Army’, the reclaiming of nature’s space in humanity.”

“To be able to emerge from the Covid cocoon with such a flourish was a marvellous collaborative effort,” adds Angus Luscombe, Course Leader, BA Visual Effects. "Echoing Isabel’s Nature’s Army piece, creativity will always find a way to burst into the sunlight."
