English Social Café – a chance to chat to other students
Intro
UWL is delighted to have a diverse student population, including many international students whose first language is not English. To support them in developing their conversation skills, the University is launching an English Social Café where they can meet up with native and non-native speakers, chat, and gain confidence in spoken English.
Main body
All UWL students can attend the café, which is taking place on Tuesday 28 February between 1pm and 2pm, in the Lammas section of Weston Hall at the St Mary’s Road Campus (LA.GF.006). FREE tea, coffee, and muffins will be provided.
Café organisers Alison Griffin, John Barron and Katherine Smythe, who are all part of the Study Support Team, said:
We want it to be fun and informal. It is a chance to meet new people, find out more about the local area and maybe even take part in a quiz.”
Alison adds that particularly for students who have moved away from their country and family and friends to come and study in London, when socialising, it is easy to gravitate towards others who speak their native language. However, developing their spoken English will be highly beneficial for making the most of their time at UWL, both socially and academically.
Someone who knows this first-hand is Study Support Administrator Carlos Fernandez, who came to UWL five years ago to study for a BA (Hons) in Film Production. Originally from Colombia, Carlos found studying in English challenging at the start of his degree. He was quick to access help and resources from Study Support for himself, particularly when faced with the realities of writing essays in English.
Carlos said:
One place where I felt very comfortable meeting new people was in local cafes. I could get into conversation and share my story and learn new words and expressions with people informally. The English Social Café will be a great way for people to do this on campus and I am looking forward to taking part myself!”
