Last year, LCM set up the Christopher Small, Andy Strange Prize. Christopher Small was an inspirational tutor who gave Andy his first opportunity in the college studios in Vestry Hall at LCM.

The Prize involved a day at Andy’s North London studio, where he mixed tracks from the students’ final year ‘Major Projects’. Andy was able to walk them through his process and approach to mixing, to help take their tracks to the next level.

Current LCM students and alumni Erica Macchi, Theano Sakalidou, Cesar Esquinca Flores and Edward Therens Garcia Pelaez are the winners of the 2023 Christopher Small, Andy Strange Prize. At the end of their studio day, Andy gifted each of them a piece of musical equipment to support them on their onward musical journeys.

This experience has been one of a kind, and one that I will never forget. Andy’s willingness to help us exceeded my expectations by far, and definitely set the bar high for my next releases,”

said BA Music Performance student Erica Macchi.

Sam Sutton, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for BA Music Technology at LCM, added:

There is so much value for students in shadowing someone with Andy’s experience and to learn from his mixdown process.”

On the event, Andy said:

It was a pleasure and honour to return to UWL as a guest lecturer. My three years as a student undoubtedly helped to shape both my personal and professional life and resulted in a long and rewarding career. I am proud to be associated with a music prize to honour and acknowledge Christopher, a great musician, academic, educator, and patient, kind-hearted man.”

Andy’s guest lecture was made possible by the generous support of the Students’ Union.
