Students make their mark at iconic Abbey Road studios
Introduction
Playing in one of the world’s most iconic studios, musicians and composers from the University of West London (UWL) spent a day at Abbey Road to make the most of impressive links with the music industry.
More than 40 students from UWL’s London College of Music (LCM) BMus (Hons) Music Performance and BMus (Hons) Composition courses took part in a full day of recording at the world-famous venue this week, having the chance to showcase their skills and learn from leading experts.
Performers, members of UWL’s Camerata orchestra, rehearsed and recorded classics from Mozart through to Milhaud, as well as a piece written by final-year composition student, Francesco Redica – and all led by LCM’s trainee composers and conductors.
The session was all part of an ongoing partnership between UWL and the Abbey Road Institute which allows students to learn from each other and hone their performance, conducting, and recording skills with a full orchestra.
Matthew Lewis a final-year composition student who conducted on the day, described the experience as a fantastic way to sit in with renowned composers and the institute’s engineers and students to get a real insight into the recording process.
Student, Megan Russell, who conducted her own arrangement of the Milhaud at the recording, said:
This was such an incredible experience. It is absolutely iconic and to work with such amazing musicians there was something I won’t forget, it really solidified what I want to do as a musician.
Pippa Griffin, BMus (Hons) Performance student, said:
Recording with the LCM Camerata at Abbey Road was such an amazing opportunity. To be able to perform in the same room where so many inspirational musicians have recorded was really special.
Simon Rigby, Senior Lecturer and Musical Director of LCM Camerata, said:
This session provided an invaluable opportunity for our students to network with internationally recognised specialists in the recording industry.
Emilie Capulet, Head of Classical Performance Studies said:
What a memorable start to our year and such an inspiring and valuable experience for all students involved.
Professor Nicholas McKay, Director of the London College of Music, said:
We are incredibly proud of how we connect our students with leading professionals in the industry, and our partnership with the Abbey Road Institute is a wonderful example of the benefits of that.
To be connected to such a leading and iconic community has such an impact, and this is another incredible opportunity for our students to really experience the benefit of collaboration as they build their careers with us.
