As part of ARTSFEST, 26 graduates from our fashion business courses held a private view event on Tuesday 6 June, at the Espacio Gallery in Bethnal Green.

The gallery showcased posters and images from the students’ projects as well as portfolio showreels on screens and projections. As part of the event, which brought together around 100 students, staff and industry contacts, six students gave short presentations of their final major project ideas. The group launched their graduate website on the night, using iPads to show guests their work.

The website is a platform for students' work, created by the students’ for guests and anyone with a vested interest in what our students have to offer.

David Thomas, Course Leader for Fashion Promotion and Imaging, explains, adding that the event really is a celebration of what the students have achieved.

There’s a nice mix of projects this year, all of them present individualism and professionalism.”

Several students already have jobs lined up in the industry for after graduation. David continues,

We try and connect their studying with their job aspirations as they start their final year and that seems to be working well. For example, one of our students got a brand that's based in Amsterdam and the UK. She got it in December last year and then focused her final major project on looking at how to enhance communication strategies and digital user experience for that company.”

The job market for graduates is incredibly competitive, and companies are finding employees via retail roles too, David says.

We're trying to embrace this so our students can get their foot in the door and then excel further. By connecting their studies and their interests, they're getting better opportunities.”

The Espacio Gallery show is a great finale for the students to celebrate all they have achieved. David explains,

We wanted to do a show with graphics, VFX and photography all sharing the same space. It makes everyone aware that there's a creative community at UWL and showing our work within one of London’s hubs of creativity is important to our students. It aligns with their aspirations and boosts their confidence.”
