UWL hosts ‘A Place Among the Dead’ screening plus Q&A with the filmmakers
Intro
On Saturday 17 August, the University of West London hosted an exclusive live film screening of ‘A Place Among the Dead’ (2020), the directorial debut of actress Juliet Landau (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Tim Burton’s Ed Wood, Bosch and TNT’s Claws). The screening was followed by a Q&A with Juliet and her husband, photographer and cinematographer Deverill Weekes, who co-wrote and co-produced the film.

More than 100 people attended the event, which was produced by UWL’s Partnership Student Experience Coordinator Martin Marshall, including students and staff from the London School of Film Media and Design (LSFMD) and the London College of Music (LCM), as well as film fans more generally.
‘A Place Among the Dead’ is a genre-bending elevated-horror, whose cast also includes Gary Oldman, Ron Perlman, Robert Patrick, Lance Henriksen and best-selling author of ‘The Vampire Chronicles’ Anne Rice, appearing for the first time ever in a scripted movie.
LCM’s Theatre Technical Manager Paul Comerford and Theatre Technical Demonstrator Nikki Sutton did an excellent job of screening the film.
It’s a real compliment to UWL that Lawrence Hall stands up to the expectations and demands of a screening of a commercially released film, particularly when the director, writers, producers and lead actress were in attendance!”
commented Paul.
This was an incredible screening. Our film was projected beautifully in the lovely Lawrence Hall theatre by Paul and Nikki, who along with Martin went above and beyond,”
said Juliet and Deverill.
The exploration of the repercussions of growing up under the sway of narcissism and psychological abuse depicted in the film, provokes profound audience discussion, so we were thrilled to open this screening up to all UWL students including psychology, theatre and film students along with the general audience.
It was a night we will never forget.”
BA (Hons) Recording Mixing and Production student George Warlow said,
The event was fantastic. It was great to meet the directors and members of their fandom. I can see how fans have fallen in love with the movie!”
