Intro

Welcome to GIAM.

We are a flagship Institute within UWL delivering interdisciplinary applied research and education. Our focus is on delivering the evidence to inform high quality health and social care to benefit people living with dementia, older people, and their care partners and families.

The heart of our mission is to ensure the most vulnerable populations of people living with dementia and older people have better experiences of health and social care, and are supported in living well and living at home for longer.

Our funding incorporates University support, Department of Health and Social Care contracts (via NIHR), funding from national charities, and philanthropic support.

For more information, contact the Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory GIAM@uwl.ac.uk.

Our postgraduate education

Our postgraduate education programmes offer interdisciplinary, research focused, evidence-based teaching and supervision. We have created a learning environment where students experience a breadth and depth of contemporary dementia care knowledge and education, both theoretical and applied. Specific emphasis is placed on research outcomes, innovation, and real-world practice. Ultimately, our postgraduate courses are designed to cultivate leaders in ageing and dementia care, and to improve practice across health and social care settings.

Our research impact

We have established a reputation for the rapid translation of our research into impact, which is shaping the policy agenda, informing public discourse, and translated into practice improvements. The Department of Health and Social Care funding body (NIHR) recognise the rigour of our research and our commitment to its translation into meaningful impact, making a practical difference to people’s lives, and improving care. Find out more on the NIHR website.

Our research has informed health and social care practice, including All Party Parliamentary Group priorities, Public Inquiries, NICE quality standards in dementia care, National Dementia Standards and National Safeguarding Procedures.

Community involvement

All our research and education programmes are developed in collaboration with stakeholders that include people living with dementia, older people, care partners and families, health and social care practitioners and services. This reflects UWL’s commitment to serving our communities.

To support community involvement, we have established networks and steering committees that advise and work with us to set the agenda for our research and education programmes. People with lived experience are always included as co-applicants on grant proposals to ensure our research is meaningful and relevant.
