Overview

This credit-bearing course, offered at both our West London and Reading campuses, is taken as the first module in the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice and the MSc Advancing Professional Practice.  

A compendium of self-assessment tools will be provided to give you an insight into areas of your professional persona that, when developed, will make you more effective within your professional role.

You will be prepared to undertake a critical appraisal of evidence which will give you the foundation skills you will use throughout your Masters degree to translate research into policy and practice.

You will develop an increased insight into the role of emotional intelligence and authenticity both in the enhancement of professional practice and in the leadership of the multi-professional team.

Course requirements: Evidence of study at Level 6 (Degree Level). Please note, this module is normally only available to students who have indicated they want to take the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice or the MSc Advancing Professional Practice. Cost and funding: This fee covers the full course cost.

This course is taught on day release, select a start date to see the study days:

Study days are from 9am to 5pm.

This course will introduce three of the four pillars of Advanced Practice:

  • leadership
  • education
  • research.

You will explore your professional identity and leadership potential in relation to Advanced Clinical Practice/Advancing Professional Practice.

You will critically appraise evidence to translate research and policy into practice in accordance with your professional development needs.

The course will focus on increased insight into the role of emotional intelligence and authenticity to enhance both professional practice and leadership of the multi-professional team.

I have been leading various iterations of the Masters in Advanced Practice since 2009 at UWL, taking revised versions of the program through successful validation/revalidation ever 4 years. In addition, I led on the accreditation of the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice programme with Health Education England in 2020. I am passionate about empowering healthcare practitioners with the soft skills to make a different in their practice and cite the discovery of emotional intelligence and transactional analysis amongst my highlights in academia. During the pandemic, I became a proficient user of graphic design software, predominantly using Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud, which I believe gives my students an immersive and entertaining, quality learning experience.

History Taking and Physical Assessment (Level 7) is the second module on the Advanced Clinical Practice Pathway and students on the MSc Advancing Professional Practice will normally progress onto the Leadership Strategies to Improve the Patient Experience module.

How to apply

After you have been accepted onto the MSc pathway, your course leader will advise you if you need to apply for this course.

Students on the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice will not need to apply for this module, as you will automatically be allocated a place. Students on the MSc Advancing Professional Practice will need to apply for each module throughout their course.
