This module provides an in-depth understanding of fundamental concepts in data science, focusing on aviation-specific datasets.
You will learn IT concepts such as database management, data acquisition, normalisation, and advanced data processing techniques, and will gain an understanding of the dataset more relevant in modern aviation.

Operations Research and Statistical Methods for Aviation
This module introduces the fundamentals of Operations Research techniques and statistical methods crucial for analysing aviation data.
It focuses on optimisation techniques and statistical analysis such as regression, hypothesis testing, time-series analysis, used to derive insights and support effective business decision-making in aviation.

This module equips students with foundational programming skills essential for data analysis in the aviation industry. You will be introduced to the languages most used in data analytics (Python, R, VBA), and will learn essential elements of Python programming with practical case studies on aviation data.

This module offers an in-depth analysis of specific applications of data analytics in aviation, through the study of real-world aviation cases and practical exercises. You will examine how airlines and airports use large amounts of data and advanced techniques to drive business decisions in areas such as pricing and revenue management, network and fleet planning, customer segmentation, crew scheduling and flight planning.

Ethical and Legal Aspects of Aviation Data Analysis
This module delves into the intricate ethical considerations and legal frameworks surrounding aviation data analytics.
It explores the ethical implications of data collection, handling, and utilisation within the aviation industry, addressing privacy concerns, data security, transparency, and responsible use of data, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Aviation Applied Research Project (only for students on the regular pathway)
This module provides the opportunity to conduct a research project on any aviation topic of your choice. Projects can be academic and/or related to industry practice. You will demonstrate skills in reviewing literature, developing research methodologies, analysing information/data and project management. You will be allocated a supervisor to guide you through the process. You are encouraged to collaborate with the aviation industry to ensure impact and relevance.
Entry requirements
Successful completion of an undergraduate honours degree at grade 2:1 or above and evidence of a minimum of one year’s continuous employment in the aviation/transport/travel industry or a closely related field.
Alternatively, applicants without the specified degree must be in a senior data analytics or management role or have five years of managerial experience in the aviation/transport/travel industry.
Offers are made based on an individual’s qualifications and experiences. Prospective students may be invited to an interview to assess their application on the basis of their professionalism and work experience, prior to an offer being made.

I joined UWL in 2023 after five years of teaching aviation subjects at Buckinghamshire New University. My main area of interest revolves around the evolution of business models, marketing and strategy, and the use of IT in commercial aviation. My teaching style is based on a balanced combination of academic theory and industry knowledge, generally informed by direct experience and related to current news and events.
