Staff

Library summer bucketlistBorrowing facilities

All UWL staff can borrow from the Library – your account is created automatically and your ID card is your Library card. You will need this to borrow books. Staff can borrow up to 12 items at a time. Please note that we treat staff and students alike when it comes to overdue charges so it is important to renew or return these items on time.

Academic Support

All UWL academic staff are assigned an Academic Support Librarian based on their course subject area or School. The Librarians can support you with your teaching or research activities, or any of the areas below.

Find out what we do

All new members of staff are invited to have a Library induction – if you didn’t receive one or would just like a refresher about our services, let us know.

Library book suggestions

The UWL Library has made this suggestion form available to allow you to request books we do not currently have in stock.

So do tell us if:

  • you would like the Library to provide more copies of core books for your course
  • you want the Library to purchase books we don't currently hold.

To suggest a book to be ordered for the library please complete this book suggestion form in as much detail as possible.  Requests will be assessed by our Academic Support Librarians before a purchase is authorised.

Curriculum Development

Getting your Academic Support Librarian involved in the early stages of course design means they can ensure the right resources are available and advise on any licensing issues which might apply in relation to franchised courses. ASLs will also attend Course meetings to report on Library activities and listen to feedback.

Digitisation service

As you know, you can only make scanned copies of articles or chapters from books available to students if they are attached to Blackboard modules by the Library. We will do all the work for you – all you need to do is complete a request form. Find out more about our digitisation service.

Information skills training

As well as providing tailored database training for your students, the Library has a number of modules which provide in-depth training in finding, using and evaluating information. These can be integrated into the curriculum and Library staff can help with delivery or support academics who are delivering this training. We can also help design assessments which develop students’ critical thinking and research skills.

Access to e-resources

Staff and students have access to a wide range of e-resources including e-books, databases and e-journals. Almost all our resources can be discovered via Summon, but if you need help to create search strategies for teaching or research just ask.

Copyright advice

With regulations changing, check with your ASL for the most up-to-date advice for keeping within the law.

Reading List support

Good reading lists are critical to student success and we can help you to create dynamic topical electronic lists which are embedded directly into Blackboard. We do this using UWLReadingLists software. To learn how to create an electronic reading list, please see our LibGuide UWLReadingLists Guide for Academics.

LibGuides

From this September we will be replacing traditional paper hand-outs with electronic guides for staff and students. These can link to a wider variety of resources and can be updated frequently to include new Library stock or links to database trials etc.

Research Support

As well as helping students with their dissertations, we are always happy to help you with finding and accessing material to support teaching or research. If we don’t have what you need here, we will get it for you via our Inter-Library Loan service. We can also offer advice and information on Open Access publishing.

UWL Repository is an open access digital archive showcasing the research, scholarly and enterprise output of University of West London staff and research students.  Deposits can include printed material of all types – journal articles, conference proceedings, theses – as well as presentations, images, video and sound recordings.

10-minute briefings

As well as a generic induction for new students, we are always happy to come along to a class near the beginning of term to introduce ourselves and make sure students know what the Library can do. Get in touch to arrange a briefing.

Referencing and RefWorks

This is usually arranged for your students at your request and can take place at any time during the course, but we often target final year students approaching dissertations or final projects.

Library Champions

The Library is evolving. We’re looking for trend-setting UWL academics to be our partners on this journey. Volunteer to become a Library Champion and help us test new software and services. Give us feedback on your experiences with the Library so we can develop our processes. If you haven't started using UWLReadingLists then get in touch and our team will assist you with making your first, new and improved reading list.

For more information on becoming a Library Champion, please contact your Academic Support Librarian.
