Prospective students try out facilities at UWL’s London School of Film, Media and Design (LSFMD)

Intro

Prospective students tried out the equipment in the University of West London’s industry-standard TV and radio studios at our recent open day. A series of workshops, organised by the BA (Hons) Media and Communications team, included the chance to film a live performance by students from the London College of Music (LCM) using cutting edge Blackmagic Design cameras.

Dr John Hillman, Head of Subject for Film, Media and English, who spoke to prospective students and their families at the open day, said of the workshops:

We wanted to give everyone a chance to see how our students work creatively using the facilities on our campus. Our TV production studios and radio studios are used by our students to create content as part of their practical modules.

The dedicated staff and technicians, along with all our students on LSFMD’s different courses, create a unique community that our guests at the open day were able to experience.”

Also in the TV studio, prospective students had the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of broadcasting greats by presenting live to camera. And in the University’s radio studio, open day visitors aced the ‘read up to the song’ challenge, testing both their presentation skills and their timing.

As well as being supported by course staff and the school’s multiskilled technical demonstrators, prospective students were able to talk to current second and third years on the course. One of them, third year Media and Communications student Liberty Hosgood, said:

I think it is important for applicants to understand what the course is actually like from the perspective of a student. After finding that this course was my personal fit, I felt that I needed to share why it has been such a great experience for me.

The prospective students were keen to learn about it and I feel like they really enjoyed the personal aspects of the open day – which reflects how the course is led. I think the applicants were also interested in the practicality of the course as well as the versatility – it covers so many areas within the sector.”

Dr Hillman added:

Our students develop their multimedia skills to produce work for different platforms and audiences.

What makes LSFMD distinctive is its focus on fashioning the individual creativity of each of our students. It is our ambition that our graduates will help shape the professions they go on to become a part of.”
