UWL appoints new professor of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing

Julie Wall has joined UWL’s School of Computing and Engineering (SCE) as Professor of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Advanced Computing.

Julie’s research interests include machine and deep learning approaches to natural language processing, natural language understanding and speech technologies. Her recent research has focused on understanding human behaviour through conversational AI. This work, in collaboration with industry, has been used to detect fraud in the insurance domain.

Professor Wall says,

AI is moving so fast. The recent breakthroughs in generative AI, such as ChatGPT, have pushed AI ahead far faster than we thought. AI's potential is only beginning to be realised, and the forthcoming years promise even greater advancements.”

The ethics of AI are extremely important to Professor Wall. She is a member of the British Standards Institution (BSI), which aims to inspire trust, foster excellence and ensure safety in the use of AI.

She is also a champion for encouraging women to purse STEM careers. She recently appeared on the podcast An Intelligent Voice? discussing what the industry can do to encourage more women to the tech industry.

Professor Wall has excellent research and development connections with industry, through successful funding from the UK’s national innovation agency Innovate UK.
