Overview

The aim of this course is to prepare practising midwives to be competent Professional Midwifery Advocates (PMAs) who can fulfil their role using the A-EQUIP model to:

  • facilitate Restorative Clinical Supervision
  • develop leadership and quality improvement initiatives
  • safeguard the public through leadership
  • develop excellence in compassionate maternity care
  • optimise staff development and wellbeing through RCS, education, reflection and enhancing personal resilience. 

This credit-bearing course will facilitate meeting the competencies for appointment as a Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA) within the A-EQUIP model of clinical midwifery supervision in accordance with the Operational Guidance (NHS England, 2017).

Course requirements: This course can be taken as a standalone course or as part of the provision of the BSc (Hons) Professional Practice (Midwifery) pathway for qualified midwives. The module is shared with midwives undertaking the module at Level 7.

Pre-requisites: registered midwife and evidence of study within the past three years advantageous.

Cost and funding: This fee covers the full course cost.

Credits: 40

Assessment method: Portfolio and written assignment.

This course is taught on day release, select a start date to see the study days:

Indicative content of course:

  • The A-EQUIP model and the history of the new employer-led system of midwifery supervision
  • Developing the role of the PMA in Maternity Services
  • The use of the A-EQUIP model to develop personal, collective and professional growth
  • Midwifery legislation; regulation, conduct and competence
  • Investigating clinical incidents, report writing
  • Developing skills in Restorative Clinical Supervision
  • The role of the PMA in leadership, professional and personal development
  • Quality Improvement methodology
  • Promotion of advocacy for clients and colleagues
  • Exploration of decision-making, problem-solving, root-cause analysis, interpersonal and negotiating skills, emotional intelligence and resilience
  • Risk management, developing clinical audit
  • Exploration of change and change management
  • The development of a PMA as a leader with leadership qualities.

This course is delivered online. Study days are from 9am to 4pm.

In addition to the 10 taught days, participants will require two independent study days to enable them to work on their report and portfolio.

I have been a practising midwife since 2006 and a lecturer in midwifery since 2018. During my clinical career, I specialised in Practice Development supporting students and junior midwives in their careers.

Since working at UWL, my interest is in Leadership within Maternity services and qualified as a Professional Midwifery Advocate in 2020.
