Using Macmillan Skills for Study, LinkedIn Learning and online workshops, you can access a range of resources to help you prepare for the new academic year, in a way that best suits you.

These online activities are optional and you can benefit from them at a time that suits you.

Macmillan Skills for Study 
This electronic resource has been designed specifically for Higher Education and gives you access to videos and exercises to help you develop your academic skills. It allows you to track your progress so you can use this platform throughout the year to enhance your academic skills profile. 

LinkedIn Learning 
This platform allows you to engage in self-study on a wide range of professional and academic skills. It also allows you to track your progress, and the platform will recommend other resources you may find useful based on the training you have engaged with.

Information literacy course – LinkedIn Learning course

Information literacy is the ability to discover and use various types of information. It's an essential skill for navigating the information age. Watch this course to learn about strategies for finding information - from a library, archive, database or the internet - and the ethics of using it.

We recommend you watch the Introduction plus Section 1 on Information Types (35 minutes). You could then explore the rest of the video for the parts that you would like to learn more about.

As you are exposed to new ideas and evidence, it becomes increasingly important to think critically about the information you are working with. This means questioning assumptions, evaluating the reliability of sources and evidence and comparing propositions.

This section explains what critical thinking is and how you can apply it to your learning.

Start the activity ‘Reading and note-making’ with the diagnostic test to access your current strengths and areas to develop. Then explore the rest of the activity concentrating on the areas you would like to learn more about. 

You will need your normal UWL username and password to access the link above after choosing ‘University of West London’ from the Institution log in.

Mentor Training Session: Explore the role of a Peer Mentor

By volunteering as a Peer Mentor, you will have an opportunity to gain transferable skills whilst being key part in helping to enhance your Mentee’s student experience. To prepare you for the role, we offer interactive training sessions which counts towards your volunteering hours!
